Looking for a professional guide to help you explore the Old City of Jerusalem? The tour-app for smartphones is just the thing you’ve been looking for. The Jerusalem Development Authority has launched two smartphone applications for touring the Old City – one in Hebrew and one in English, called “The Old City of Jerusalem Audio Walking Tours”. Each gives the user a full range of guided tours through the Old City.

Jerusalem’s Old City is the most widely visited area in Israel, with some 10 million visitors each year – including both internal and foreign tourism. Recently, the Jerusalem Development Authority launched a cutting-edge website, www.jerusalem-oldcity.org.il , where visitors and potential visitors can find all the information they need to plan and enjoy their visit to the Old City. The site includes maps of different tour routes , as well as downloadable audio files in mp3 format to guide visitors along their chosen route.

Now, the Jerusalem Development Authority has taken a giant step forward technologically, with the aid of a New-Zealand based software developer, and offers a free touring app of the Old City. In the initial stage, the app is for iphone users; android users will be included in the near future.

This cellular tourism initiative is the first of its kind in Israel, offering visitors a vastly improved tourism experience of the Old City: audio-guided tours of a range of walking trails, accompanied by maps, photos and additional information – all free of charge.

“Essentially, there are two apps available – one in Hebrew, one in English. Users can choose from, 15 different paths through the Old City, some of which are handicapped-accessible. Without a doubt, the technological breakthrough makes it easier for anyone who wants to tour the Old City, and offers easy and convenient options to do so,” says Elad Kandel, Director of the Old City Section of the Jerusalem Development Authority.

“The Old City of Jerusalem Audio Walking Tours” app is available today in app-stores. Simply download, free of charge, and get ready to experience the most popular tourism site in the world.
