Visitors to the Amir Ganem Druze Museum in the Upper Galilee town of Hurfeish come away enriched with new understanding of an ancient and proud culture and faith.
Gems of that culture fill the modest, two-room premises. On one wall hang photographs dating back more than eight decades of fierce-looking, mustachioed men, which owner-director Toufiq Ganem, a retired educator in his 60s, uses to illustrate his lively presentation of Druze history. Another wall is adorned with a variety of ceremonial weapons of bygone times; yet another, with colorful costumes. Ceramic and woven-straw containers showcase old-fashioned home life, while the array of agricultural tools illuminate Druze farming traditions.
A lecture on Druze life can precede your museum visit.

The museum is located in heart of the old quarter, in Ganem’s childhood home, where his father was the village headman and his mother and grandmother its healers.

The bustling town of Hurfeish is home to some 6,000 inhabitants, almost all Druze. It is known for its proximity to the 2,400-foot-high mountain shrine to Nebi Sabalan, one of the five main prophets of the Druze faith.
The large shrine is built around a cave where the prophet is said to have hidden from persecutors. The annual celebratory visit (ziyara) to Nebi Sabalan takes place on September 10.
