The Praetorium

Below the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem’s Old City, lies the Praetorium, built over the site where Jesus was condemned by Pontius Pilate. In the 19th century, the Sisters of Zion built a convent, incorporating a still-visible ancient arch, where tradition says Pontius Pilate presented Jesus to the people. Visitors can see a huge cistern covered by a pavement etched with symbols, including a “game of the king” and massive paving stones recalling the Gabbata, mentioned in the Gospel of John.
