Tombs of the Maccabees

The Tombs of the Maccabees are located west of Jerusalem in the Ben-Shemen Forest, near Modi’in, a modern city named after the village where Mattathias, father of Judah the Maccabee, first rebelled against the Greeks. The cluster of rock-cut tombs, which appears to be a family burial, and their old Arabic name – “tombs of the Jews”– persuade many that the Maccabees were buried here. Hanukkah ceremonies have been held here for the past century.
